Have you ever used a storyboard to capture a family wedding video? A lot of people probably don’t. If you’re not in the film industry, why would you? Or maybe you don’t know what a storyboard does and don’t see the benefits associated with using one.
Storyboards are an essential element in the movie making process. A movie, animation and even a play in a theatre won’t get produced without someone creating a storyboard first. It’s basically a series of images or pictures used to visualise the movie before it is made. The storyboard form that is in use today was actually developed in the Walt Disney studios back in the 1930’s. Gone with the Wind was one of the first live action films to be completely storyboarded. One of my favourite movies, it’s so dramatic!

If you have a storyboard in place before creating your movie it helps to eliminate a lot of problems before they actually happen. It allows you to think of your video as a story and helps you plan the shots you’re going to take, the best way to take them and when. With a storyboard you can also ask for feedback on your ideas before you take your shots which will eliminate time wasting and bad shots.
Storyboards can be drawn with pen or pencil, taken with photographs or even pictures from magazines can be used. Whatever you feel comfortable doing or whatever your artistic talent allows you! If you don’t have time to create a storyboard you can use the Shotclip storyboard. Shotclip describes the wedding video in seven scenes and each scene contributes to the story of the wedding.
